Cave kayaking at Nohoch Cheen Caves Branch

Cave Kayaking better than cave tubing. Everyone knows about cave tubing but less is known about running this famous underground river by a kayak. Be part of the few people who have kayaked the caves branch river and run the entire section of three cave systems rather than one at Nohoch cheen caves near Belmopan. Enjoyed by all(5-70years) experienced and non-experienced kayakers.

The issue with cave tubing is that many of the runs are short as a person to float in an inner tube has less mobility also. Only in a kayak, are you able to navigate this river and all three massive cave systems.

This tour begins with a 2.5 hours drive from Placencia or 2 hours from Hopkins on the famous “Hummingbird Highway,” one of the most scenic drive in central america, a bit of a drive but a great way to see the country side.

Upon arrival at Nohoh cheen caves branch, we give you sometime to use restroom and to change off into your swim wear to get ready for the hike. After a 30 minute hike through the rainforest, we get to what we call the “put-in-point”.  At waters edge, you will receive a short safety briefing.  After the briefing, you will be equipped with a life jacket, paddle, helmet and head lamp.  Position yourself in your kayak, and you are now ready to embark on your journey as your kayak will be guided by the tranquil currents into the cave on the caves branch river. Once inside the cave, the light from the head lamps will reveal a lost world of sparkling stalactites and stalagmites as well as other cave formations as you float through ‘Xibalba’ mayan word for underworld or ‘Hell’. Some of the section of this cave was used by Ancient Mayas to conduct rituals, ceremonies and offerings. All in all, this float is packed with beauty, relaxation, enjoyment and wonder of the complex cave systems. Total duration of the float can vary depending on the level of the river, on average it takes approximately 2.5hours to fully explore.

You can river kayak anywhere in the world, but there are only a few places where you can kayak through caves and this being one of them.

Raul took good care of my group and I during our recent visit to Belize. Our hotel recommended him to us and we cannot recommend him enough as he is a wonderful tour guide who knows everything about his area. Highly recommend this company for any activity. Thanks again Raul

We have been caving and spelunking in many cave systems and this one is by far the coolest all around adventure with lots of fun. The walk though the jungle, swimming through the mouth of the cave, boulder climbing, and all of the artifacts make this place a real life Indiana Jones situation. We could have taken hours just taking pics and not enjoying the experience but luckily no camera allowed which made us enjoy every single second of this tour. No cameras, no problem. We would have probably lost it anyway! Easy enough that the 8 year old and 70 year old both killed it yet both had fun.

The most intense caving experience I’ve ever done. It’s sad that you cannot bring any cameras or electronic with you on the tour but Raul can email you some pictures. I enjoyed the adventure so much! Swimming, crawling, climbing are needed. The difficulty level was measured as 6 out of 10, but our group had three 70+ ladies who made through hence we went at a slower pace! If you have time and chance, do not miss out on this!
